Renewables Surpass Coal as World's Largest Electricity Source for First Time Since 1919
Renewable energy overtook coal to become the world's largest source of electricity in 2025, according to a new annual review by energy thinktank Ember. Wind and solar alone met 99% of global electricity demand growth last year, while overall fossil-fuel generation declined by 0.2% — marking the first reversal in fossil-fuel power on record.
