Chief Conductor of St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra Dies at 63 After Falling Ill Mid-Flight

Sergei Stadler, chief conductor and artistic director of the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, died on April 20 at the age of 63. Stadler fell ill aboard a flight from St. Petersburg to Istanbul, prompting the plane to divert to Bucharest, where doctors were unable to resuscitate him. A People's Artist of Russia, Stadler began playing violin at age 5 and had a distinguished career as both performer and conductor.
