Thanjavur Big Temple Inscriptions Shed New Light on Shivaji-Afzal Khan Battle
Newly studied Marathi inscriptions on the south-western walls of the Thanjavur Big Temple near the Vinayagar shrine recount the fierce battle between Maratha king Shivaji and Afzal Khan. The inscriptions also document Maratha royal history, praise Danish missionary Friedrich Christian Schwartz, and detail how King Serfoji sent troops and financial aid to the British during the war against the Marudu brothers.
