Starmer admits Mandelson appointment mistake, orders security inquiry

Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the House of Commons he would not have appointed Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to Washington had he known Mandelson failed his security vetting, admitting he made the wrong judgment. Starmer ordered an investigation into any security concerns relating to Mandelson's tenure, while rejecting calls for his own resignation. The Guardian and Deutsche Welle report that neither Starmer nor his ministers were informed of the failed vetting; France 24 notes a professor's view that Starmer 'unwittingly misled Parliament.' Mandelson was dismissed after nine months over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.
