Red hair gene actively favoured by natural selection for over 10,000 years
A large genetics study has found that the gene responsible for red hair has been positively selected for in Europe over the past 10,000 years. Scientists suggest the trait, linked to fair skin, may have been favoured for its role in vitamin D synthesis. The study also examined the broader question of whether human evolution slowed after the advent of agriculture.
