Mayon volcano ashfall forces evacuations, plunges Philippine towns into darkness
More than 300 families were evacuated after a massive ash cloud from Mayon's southwestern slope draped nearby communities in total darkness on Monday. The ashfall resulted from a sudden collapse of lava deposits, generating a pyroclastic flow, even though the volcano did not erupt explosively. Officials said the incident follows months of mild eruptive activity since January.
