Butterflies and moths reuse same genes for warning colours over 120 million years

Science Daily describes a study showing that distantly related butterflies and moths have repeatedly employed the same pair of genes to produce similar warning colour patterns for more than 120 million years. Rather than changes in the gene sequences themselves, evolution altered the regulatory switches controlling when and where the genes are active. The findings suggest that evolutionary outcomes may be more predictable than previously thought.
